"I'm not a pet." you say. "I don't know what happened but I brought the cage for Herman. I didn't know he had died."
John says, "Nah, I must have told you about Herman. I already had a cage for him."
"Not as good as this one. I got you one with all the hamster toys."
"I'm sure you'll have lots of fun playing with all of them."
You turn to the friends you like, "Mark, tell him I'm not a pet."
Mark looks like he's about to speak when one of the tough friends you don't like steps up next to Mark in an intimidating gesture. Mark stays silent.
At this point, you ponder why John is your best friend and remember that your parents are to blame. They do things to keep you isolated and John is one of the few friends they let you have. John's family has status. So you make the most of your limited social pool. At least John can be nice sometimes.
John sets the cage on the table next to his other gifts. On the other end of the table is the birthday cake. At least John is kind enough to give you a small piece of two-layer birthday cake that is slightly taller than you.
