Phoenix gives up; they'll just get burgers ...

"Fine. But as I said, no place is going to give you a burger this time of day. At least, not a decent one. Say, how about we go get some doughnuts?"

Satisfied, Maya triumphantly smiled.

When they arrived, Maya's anime-esque eyes widened. The whole place was a carnival of doughnuts and pastries!

"Oh, and by the way, it's all free, just so you know. I know the guy who owns this place. Diego acquitted him in a murder trial a while back. He let Mia have the free doughnuts too, and when I started coming to breakfast with her, he kinda passed the deal onto me. Now, knock yourself out, and find a table. I'm going to get a newspaper. Be right back."
