This choice: Maya just has some toast and eggs for breakfast • Go Back...
Chapter #3
New case: Turnabout Weight Gain
by: Unknown
Maya went over to the stove and scrambled some eggs and but some toast in the toaster. This needs a little something…bacon! Bacon is great with eggs and toast. She rummaged through the fridge for bacon and sizzled some. We still have a box of pancake mix, which would be easy to fix. Then there’s milk and orange juice, and I could cook up some hash browns for Pearly. Nick’s eating cereal, which might be good too. Peanut butter and jam for the toast. Where’s the syrup?
A few minutes later Maya covered the table with a complete continental breakfast. “I’d thought I’d cook breakfast today, Nick. Where’s Pearly?”
“Oh…” Phoenix looked at the feast laid out before him. “That was a great idea, Maya, but Pearly was going back to Kurain this weekend for some training. I just wanted to eat quickly, because we have a new case today.”
“Really? What is it?” Maya sat down and ate the food hurriedly. Phoenix didn’t notice because he was looking over the case file he was starting.
“A woman was murdered in a supermarket yesterday. Our client was seen at the scene of the crime. After we meet him at the Detention Center we can check out the crime scene and interview any witnesses. I’ll just get some of your sister’s files that might help us here.”
When Phoenix left the kitchen Maya started eating faster. Better finish this before we leave, wouldn’t wan to spoil it. After the last pancake was eaten and the milk from her cereal drained, Maya sat back and sighed with pure pleasure.
Phoenix was surprised when he came back in and saw the empty plates. “Whoa, Maya, you keep eating that fast and you’ll outgrow your acolyte clothes.”
“Ha ha,” Maya cringed. Her stomach was getting bloated from the speed at which she had eaten breakfast. She secretly loosened her sash a bit as they left.
Their client at the Detention Center was a geeky looking man with ridiculous glasses named F. A. Feedem. Throughout the interview he kept nervously looking around, as if he thought people were watching him. “Did you kill the victim, Shelly Ulite?”
“No-o!” Feedem stammered. “I-I was just looking for her when I found here lying in that aisle.”
“Looking for her? Did you know the victim?”
“Y-yeah, just a little. I had seen her earlier in the supermarket when I was shopping and I tried to catch her attention, but I lost her for a while. The next time I found her she was…”
“Alright, Mr. Feedem, we’ll just investigate the crime scene now. If I may ask, what does F. A. stand for?”
“My name’s Fredrick Alfred Feedem, but I found F. A. to be a shorter and easier nickname.”
Ten minutes later Phoenix and Maya walked into the supermarket where the crime took place. With Phoenix’s attorney badge, they were able to get into an aisle that was roped off: the snack food aisle.
“Man, that’s a really big chalk line…” Maya said.
“Yeah. The victim was 21-year-old Shelly Ulite. She was rather overweight.”
“I wonder why she was killed.”
“That’s what we need to find out.”
