Some Things are Better Left Unsaid

“She looks thin, too thin. Is there hope for her?” Sally asked. She and a few other waitresses were off on break chatting in the back, employee-only room. Lisa was nearby listening as best as she could, she could only make out a few words.

One of the people among the discussion was Rod Crewn, a middle aged bum who at 30 was cut off from his parent’s credit cards and money stream. He was a late bloomer of sorts who was working at the dinner for some much needed spare cash. He was only semi-portly despite being born and raised in South Barkalow, but his appetite was something many citizens yearned for. He’s claimed to have eaten out entire menus, and despite his constant bragging nobody doubts him. “I say tie her down and feed her till she pops!” He roared loudly with a grand, toothy grin.

Martha was a young, new employee who was far from being called the “new kid”. She was loud, lovable and a definite porker. She was a boisterous young girl who flirted with customers and she was somebody who didn’t mind going doing “over time” with employers to get a promotion. Everybody thought she was sleeping with the boss but she was so loud and friendly that she had no real enemies. “Oh don’t be so harsh Rod! She looks like a very sweet girl.” Martha seemed strangely passionate.

Rod recoiled back to the kitchen to pick up another round of food. “I was only joking…” He muttered knowing he should just shut up; since Martha knew almost everybody in town no one wanted to offend her. She was kind of like the popular girl in school.

Martha cleared her throat and continued. “I think we should be nice. Just coax her into it, I mean I was just like her when I came here, don’t you remember?” Everyone nodded. “I was skin and bones too…” Martha smiled. “Until you showed me that Filler Special!” She said smiling widely at Sally. “Offer her that!”

“I did!” Sally offered. “But she said no, I’m sure I can nudge her into it though.”

At that moment a tall bald man tapped Lisa’s shoulder. “Need some help miss?” Lisa was scared half to death as she quickly turned around.

“Uhh, yes I was just checking to see if my food was ready.” Lisa lied as she crept slowly back to the seating area. The man smiled, Lisa could tell he was annoyed but by no means suspicious.

1. Lisa decides to cut her losses and leave, what were those waitresses and waiters talking about? Does it really mean anything?
2. Although a bit shaken Lisa decides not to go to her apartment and instead travel around the town and start to get a feel for what she is reporting on.
