She rolls down her window as the officer approaches the door.
“Do you know how fast you were going?”
“I had the cruise set on 65.”
“I clocked you at 68 and this is a holiday weekend so we must insist on strict adherence to the law for the safety of everyone.”
“Yes, sir,” she knew better than to argue with him.
“Driver’s license and registration,” he barks. She takes her driver’s license out of her purse and hands it to him and reaches over to her glove compartment to get the car registration. “Did you know that your license expired last week?”
“No, … I didn’t realize it expired this year.” She handed the officer her car registration.
“I’ll be back in a moment.” The officer walked back to his cruiser.
Jeri is a little concerned about her expired license and is upset with herself for not checking. She could see him in his cruiser through her rearview mirror and assumed he was checking her plates and such.
After a few minutes the officer returned, “Ms. Wilson, I’ll have to take you in and we will have to tow your vehicle.”
“What?” Jeri gasps.
“You will have to take this up with the police department, ma’am.”
