The kids were close to the city, a bit too close. The initial blast just tickled their toes, but it was enough of a reaction to spread through them. To make matters worse, the group around the city had grown a bit in numbers which caused some interesting effects. In any case, everything that grew had 250 feet for every inch it had been tall.
A lot of kids looked down and around at trees which were practically fuzz against their feet and in the middle of them was the village, normal sized, at least to the world. For them it was still a tiny thing that could fit underfoot. A few kids were now the strongest thing in the known worlds, so big that bullets probably wouldn't get through their skin and artillery shells would be more like midget fire crackers.
As for those with the odd effects, those kids who'd crowded around were just a bit too far away, however some things on them had been able to get hit anyway. Kids who had shoes still to be for example, their feet would be too far back but the footwear would grow. Oddly the devices effects transferred through living things well, but not so much for non-living. As a result, huge bits of jewelry, footwear and in some cases clothes surrounded a few ordinary sized people.
One wolf was surrounded by a gigantic metal wall, a toe ring of all things. A handful of human kids were either on or in shoes, socks, flip-flops, sandals, shirts and more that was a few hundred times too large for them. If only they'd been just a bit closer to the village.
