‘Bernard!’
‘Who?’
‘The accountant I found for you.’ As if a light bulb flashed in her head, the evening replayed in Jessica’s head perfectly to the last detail. The date was an absolute disaster. It wasn’t believed to be possible for a person to be so boring until Bernard appeared on the scene. Breaking into her thoughts, Kate continued, ‘Well, anyway, I spotted him in the restaurant and so we got talking and he’s totally into you! So, I‘ve set you a reservation for Monday night. Nine o’clock. You finish by then right?’
‘Kate, I...’
‘It’s OK you can thank me later! Got to dash, got to be in early today Susie’s got the day off. See you later.’ And with that, the call was terminated without the chance of cancelling the date. There was no way she could spend another minute with Bernard. What was Kate thinking? What was Bernard thinking? How did he think that a second date was on the cards. Surely there is no more that can possibly be said about the stock market and the current share prices. Really, do all accountants only know about their calculating jobs with no other possible interests that don’t involve numbers or had she just got lucky with this one!
With the flapping of the letterbox, Jessica was brought back to reality, suddenly realising that she had been standing there holding the phone for much too long. Quickly dashing around the flat, hurriedly getting ready she thought hard about her next move.
