The Beginning of Every Bad Fantasy Tale

The Rosencroft manor has been abandoned for upwards of 40 years now; the family still owns the land but won't sell it. The location is secluded, a clearing deep in the woods with only a thin winding road leading up the hill to the house. Various bizarre creatures have been supposedly sighted near the manor, and the house itself is rumored to be haunted. It's the best place to go for a shot at an exotic animal.
Once a grand testament to the wealth of the Rosencroft family, the manor had fallen into a hideous state of disrepair. Faded, flaking paint clung futilely to dry rotted wood and the windows that weren't broken were incredibly dirty. Various small animals had nested on the roof or its overhang, including bees, wasps, and various birds. There were no signs of larger animals nearby, though.
You circle the house, wanting to go inside but feeling a trill of fear. Your imagination runs wild with what sorts of things may dwell inside, none of them quite the study subject you seek and all of them supernaturally dangerous. While thinking of an excuse to go home, you step onto the wooden cellar door, laid flat into the ground. The old wood cracks and shatters beneath you, unable to hold the weight of a lark let alone a human being.
The cellar floor greets your ass painfully, light steaming in from the square hold above you. As your eyes adjust to the low light, you gasp in shock at what you see. There in the cellar, not ten feet away from you and staring back, is a giant rat! A bizarre intelligence shines in its black eyes, and its body is covered in thick dark fur. It appears well fed, but you don't know what it's been eating and are not keen on finding out. It's roughly the size of a large dog, it doesn't seem inclined to hurt you but your imagination tells you this could change at any moment. You...
