The blue haired girl known as Rei Ayanami had emerged from the Sea of LCL approximately 245 days, 17 hours, and 12 minutes ago flat. The world had returned to normalcy, but the girl could observe startling differences. People seemed unchanged yet changed, particularly the Pilot Ikari. He had returned far earlier than she had, and unsurprisingly seemed different. She felt an emotion unlike others toward Ikari, a most perplexing emotion. What was this desire, this want? Was this the emotion known as love?
However, judging by the body language former Pilot Ikari displayed, he did not share Rei’s emotions of desire. To be exact, he possessed desire, but it was not directed at the wolfish-haired girl, but rather at the scarlet German girl, Asuka. Toward the girl, Rei felt an almost unfair emotion toward her, a resenting, foul emotion. Was this the emotion known as jealousy? Yes, perhaps it was. Whenever Rei even spoke to Shinji, even as a friend, the German had a mixture of odd emotions in her eyes. Were they jealousy, too? Part of her seemed afraid, frightened by Rei’s very presence, her disposition, her sense of being.
Perhaps Rei would never know.
“First!” Rei turned at the sound of Asuka’s condescending pet name for her. She never did like the name, though, considering she still refered to Asuka and Shinji as “Pilot” despite the trio having not used an Eva in the past couple years following Third Impact, it was only fair she’d be addressed similarly.
“Pilot Sohryu,” Rei replied in regard to the German.
“Listen, I’ve been doing some thinking lately,” Asuka said, scratching the back her head, “And I kinda realized I’ve been acting really immature lately.”
Was Pilot Sohryu apologizing? What a curious way she was doing it. She wasn’t making eye contact, which lead Rei to one of two possible solutions. Either Asuka was lying and didn’t want Rei to see her bluff, or she was so ashamed she couldn’t make eye contact. Judging by the facial expression accompanying her lack of eye contact, it lead Rei to believe the latter, but why was the jealousy insideo f Rei making her believe the German girl was lying through her teeth?
“Look, I’ve been a bitch to you. I really have, and truthfully you don’t really deserve it. I mean, I’ve just been really jealous. Shinji is…well, the idiot is…ya know.”
“I’m afraid I don’t, but I can forgive you,” Rei replied, bowing slightly.
“Listen, I gotta do something for you. Can I make you dinner sometime?” Rei considered Asuka’s invitation before finally speaking.
“I’m not fond of meat.”
