Templeton looked over to a row of temporary buildings down the path. Surely there was something in there he could eat, and besides, he could use the shelter from the rain. He glanced all around one more time to make sure the coast was clear, then began making his way toward them.
His belly was still too immense for him to easily crawl on all fours. But Templeton quickly discovered that if he walked on his two hind legs and arched his back a bit, he could move along more quickly. It was still difficult, slow going with his distended gut stretched before him, wobbling just above the ground as it pulled him forward. His tail swished behind him in a fruitless effort to counterbalance the rocking movements of his off-center mass. And every few steps his balance would fail him and he’d stumble forward into the muddy, rain-soaked path. But the discomfort and inconvenience of toppling into his belly would always quickly give way to a fit of giggles as Templeton marveled at how impressively he’d grown in so short a time.
“My my,” he laughed to himself after falling forward yet again, his hind legs bicycling in the air, knees kneading into his soft sides as he tried to rock himself backward. “This is going to take some getting used to.”
Hind feet finally back on the ground, he straightened his knees, hefted his belly off the ground with a grunt, bent his back, waited a moment to ensure his balance was right, then began making his way forward again. He moved more deliberately now, his gait a slow waddle.
He was glad to have checked for all the humans to have left, because reaching the first building took much longer than expected. Once there, his ratty instincts took over and he slid under the floorboards, looking for a way inside.
He didn’t know it, but the building he had chosen was a….
