Chapter #5Eat now by: Unknown Resting against the half-eaten pumpkin as he was, Templeton knew he couldn't leave without finishing it. The half already in his belly would get lonely, he reasoned. Besides, he'd come to this fair specifically to gorge with reckless abandon, and he wasn't one to give up on a challenge, especially when it involved eating as much as his stomach could hold.
With some difficulty he turned around and sank his teeth into the pumpkin's exposed flesh, tearing off a large chunk and forcing it down his throat without chewing at all. It landed in his belly with a satisfying plop. Templeton waited for a moment to see if his stomach would burst, and when it didn't, he resumed eating the pumpkin with greater enthusiasm. He moaned with delight as the juicy pumpkin squeezed its fluids down his throat. He swallowed the chewy seeds by the handful. Within the hour, he was flopped down on the inside of an empty pumpkin rind, groaning as he gave his stomach a chance to adjust to the sudden influx of food.
All that was left was the rind.
Templeton went to work on devouring the pumpkin rind from the inside out. If anyone had been watching, it would've been an amazing sight. The pumpkin slowly but surely collapsed inward as Templeton ate, tearing off chunk after chunk and shoving them into his greedy mouth. He ate relentlessly, ignoring his enormous stomach's moans of protest, oblivious to the fact that he was ballooning up to nearly the size that the pumpkin had been before it had had the misfortune of encountering him. Sticky pumpkin juices coated his fur. As he ate the last chunk of pumpkin skin, he used his fat to roll himself into a more-or-less upright position.
Seated as he was where the blue-ribbon pumpkin had been, the vegetable stand almost looked like it had been set up for him. Empty and half-empty baskets of vegetables were scattered all around him. His proud belly swayed to and fro as it churned its ridiculously large contents. One of Templeton's paws was resting on top of his enormous stomach. The other one was clutching the pumpkin's stem.
"Seems wrong to- hiiiiiccc- just leave the stem," he slurred out loud, followed by another loud and near-painful hiccup. He opened his mouth wide and shoved the large piece of vine inside. His stomach hurt at first at the introduction of something so inflexible, but with help from Templeton's throat and also his paws, the whole thing got shoved inside with a noisy squelch.
The pumpkin was gone.
Templeton let out a triumphant belch.
"My sto- hiiic- stomach can- hic- can- handle- hiiiicc- 'nything," he moaned, barely able to speak since his throat was so exhausted from the gorge. "Take- urrrrp." He was cut off from his gloating by a belch and another hiccup. "Take that, Wilbur. Stupid- hic- Charlotte."
His stomach gurgled appreciatively, as if offering its own congratulations. Bleary-eyed, Templeton stared down at the word he picked- "humble." Would he even be able to make it back to Wilbur's pen in this state?
Well, regardless, he couldn't stay here. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
