Alphonse Elric drew two cards for his poker hand and smiled inwardly as his three of a kind turned into a full house. Al had a good poker face, considering that his face was just a helmet to a suit of armor that his soul was attached too. His older brother, Edward Elric had a real face and a real body--save for two of his automail limbs. The two brothers from Resembool were on a train headed for a town called Melby to the far west. During their research for the Philosopher's Stone, Al had came upon a name; Cassandra Miller. It had said that Cassandra Miller had been researching the stone too, but hadn't become a state alchemist..which was odd, because you needed to be a State Alchemist in order to research the Philosopher's Stone. Cassandra had somehow sneaked her way into Central's library to research the stone, but had given up after only a month or so. Cassandra had also stolen several books from the library and had taken them to her home in Melby. One other thing that peaked Al's interest in Cassandra Miller was the fact that she had a name for herself--she had called herself the "Unbirthing Alchemist". Al and Ed didn't know what "Unbirthing" meant and neither did Mustang or the other "dogs of the military" as Ed put it. So, Ed and Al got on a train headed for Melby in hopes to meeting this Cassandra and hoping that she found something about the Philosopher's Stone that they didn't.
The two Elric Brothers were used to long train rides. They usually played poker to pass the time and save themselves to be bored silly. Their very first train ride to Central wasn't boring at all; Ed had defeated a man with an automail arm like he had. But all the other train rides following that had been dull and boring, so the two brothers played poker.
"I bet $15" said Al, bringing the money onto the table.
Ed had taken two cards and was now doing some serious thinking.
"Your $15 and $20 more" said Ed.
"You don't have any aces up your sleeve this time" said Al. "I looked earlier"
"Are you gonna call or raise?" asked Ed.
"Call" said Al. "I got a full house"
"A straight beats a full house" said Ed, laying out his five cards.
"DAMNIT!" yelled Al. "even when you don't cheat, I still lose. Shall we play another hand?"
"I had enough of poker" said Ed. "we'll be in Melby in 45 minutes anyway"
"Right, no reason to play a long hand of poker" said Al. "you're just afraid you'll lose to me fair and square"
"Whatever you think, Big Guy" said Ed, looking out the window. The train was traveling on a bridge above a huge lake.
