Before the conversation could continue, the three of them jumped out of their skin at the tremendous bang which sounded like it originated from the back garden, causing the house to shake violently.
"Jesus, what was that?!" Heather splutter.
"Was it a gun?" Jannet asked, terrified.
"That was too loud for a gun, surely - it sounded more like a cannon" Nick added. "Stay here, I'll go and check the back".
"No way, I'm coming with you - Jan, get ready to call the police or something" Heather said. Jannet nodded and grabbed her phone from the table, following Nick and Heather towards the back door.
Tentatively, Nick was the first to peer out the window. "What do you see?" Heather asked.
"Nothing really... Just lots and lots of smoke. I don't hear anything either, it's all gone real quiet.
Slowly and quietly he opened the back door and crept out before whispering back to his wife to stay but Heather refused. Jannet did stay back however, with one finger hovering over the dial button on her smartphone but noticed that she had lost Nick and Heather in the otherworldly mist.
"H... Hey, don't leave me alone!" she whimpered, chasing after the couple. Wading through the fog was a terrifying experience as she couldn't see more than 2 feet in front of her, until it started to turn pink in colour as she got deeper in to it.
"Heather? Nick?" she pleaded to the most but no answer came. The pink hue intensified and Jannet pushed on until she found the source of it - a large rock wedged firmly into the broken ground, glowing a brilliant purple and pink whilst emitting a strange glistening sound.
Curiosity pulled Jannet in closer. "What? Is this some sort of meteorite?"
As she edged towards the object, she was broken out of her trance-like state by...
