The new place was called The Happy Penguin, and featured a smiling plastic mascot by the door as I came in. There was a long counter with stools along it, and a huge selection of flavours under glass. I cast my eyes all along it, licking my lips.
'See anything you like?' said a voice. I looked up – and up – into the blue eyes of this ice-cream goddess. Now I'm the sort who falls for every shop girl with a smile, but she was something else. For one thing, she was at least six feet tall, with golden-blonde hair that was tied up out of her beautiful, soft face, which had a brief scattering of freckles over the nose, one corner of which was pierced with a little stud.
'Um,' I said. 'Um. Yes, no, I mean, yeah, um. It all looks – good – what do you, ah, what do you recommend?'
She thought for a moment, then indicated with her ice cream scoop, 'Well, see the different kinds of chocolate we have? There are seven different kinds, and we have this thing which is a scoop of each, with some hot fudge sauce. I know it's my favourite. Some people might think it's a bit much though.'
'Oh, no, totally. That sounds amazing.'
She smiled. 'Great, have a seat then.' Surprisingly, for such a hot day, there were only a couple of other people in the shop, but I suppose it was still early. I sat on a stool at the counter and watched her as she leaned over to scoop one of each flavour into a sundae glass. She had a lovely, pear-shaped figure, kind of concealed by her uniform but even its crisp white fabric couldn't hide the flare of her hips. I rolled my eyes to the ceiling and bit my lip as she squeezed chocolate sauce over it and brought it over with a long spoon stuck in.
I thanked her, and tried a spoonful. 'Oh, it's great, thanks,' I said truthfully. She beamed. I have to say something, I thought; I won't be fit to live with myself if I just sit here and eat while this gorgeous creature is standing right in front of me.
