His sister opens her mouth to retaliate, but all that comes out is a scraping sound - the kind a stone makes when it rubs against another stone. She gazes at him, afraid, wondering what happened to her voice. She puts up her hand to feel her face, and she and Tommy both realise together - instead of ears, she now has pebbles growing out the side of her head. Her mouth opens to scream - again, a scraping sound, high pitched, like chalk squeaking against the blackboard.
Tommy's sister is frantic, and so is Tommy. What she says usually doesn't make any sense, but to have her making scraping sounds is more than he can bear.
Tommy is distracted from his sister's problems by a loud noise near the window. The cats and dogs, having no place to go, have started spilling inside. Soon, the house is full of curs, hounds, mongrels and whelps of every shape and size. Not to mention scores of meowing monsters, kicking kitten and their kin.
As Tommy rushes to do something - anything - he gets bitten by a boxer, and promptly falls over a Siamese. Completely exasperated, he exclaims:-
