You watch Jillian drive from the cup holder. Every now and then she stares down at you and smiles. The two of you chat it up for a while, talking about the hospital life. You find out that she was transferred from a different branch, and that she would only be there temporarily. After saying this, she changes the subject abruptly. It doesn’t bother you, and the conversation goes on. After some more talking, she puts the car in park and picks you up. “We’re here!” she says cheerfully.
The restaurant she takes you to is an upscale Asian steakhouse. You remember seeing it on the way to work, but you’ve never stopped by to try it. She orders a combo which has noodles and many different types of meat and vegetables. You yourself don’t order anything, since a few pieces of her plate can more than fill you up. When you bring up sharing her food, she frowns. “Why don’t you order your own food, instead of mooching off of mine?” You explain how little you eat, and after some argument she finally begrudgingly agrees to share. The date gets a bit rough after that. You try to strike conversations, but she seems less and less involved in each successive topic. Eventually you both sit there and eat quietly.
The check arrives, and you intend to be a gentleman and pay. Due to your size, you can’t really carry any cash or cards. Luckily, you have memorized all of your credit card information. Most of the city knows about you because of your strange condition, and they understand when you pay by giving them the card number vocally. You ask the waiter to take you to the register so you can tell him the number, but he refuses. “I’m sorry… sir…” he says while staring at you curiously, “our policy doesn’t allow customers to just ‘give’ us the numbers. Are you going to have trouble paying?”
“Ugh, you’re completely useless”, says Jillian. She reaches into her wallet and throws down a wad of cash. “I’m done!” she shouts and storms off. You shout at her to come back but she doesn’t even turn around.
Everything is suddenly quiet, and everyone is staring at you. After a moment, they turn back and go back to their business. Being thoroughly embarrassed, you climb down off of the table and make your way to the door. You manage to avoid the high heels and shoes of random people on your way to the exit. You slip outside the door and look around. Your place is only a few miles away, but the night is dark and cold. You shiver and make your way towards home.
