While arranging your paperwork, a call comes through to your desk. Your face is instantly frowns as you see the caller ID, It’s your boss. Any time your boss ever called, you knew it was trouble. He never seemed to call to say hello, it was always late nights or odd assignments. There aren’t many feelings similar to sewing up stitches when you are standing on your patient.
You press a button built for you on your desk which puts the phone on speaker and say, “hello, Dr. Mcminor speaking.” Your boss wastes no time and says, “Mcminor, I need to see you in my office when you get a chance.” “When you get a chance” is code word for “now”. You quickly acknowledge and end the call. Climbing down off the desk, you think about how many hours you’ll have to stay late this time. It figures, since you just got finished with the workload you already had.
You make your way down the corridors to your boss’s office. You pass by a few of the nurses as you go, catching a few pieces of eye candy. You arrive in your boss’s office but don’t get noticed until you climb up his desk. “Oh! Snuck up on me again, have you?” Like I haven’t heard that a million times, you think. “What can I do for you, sir”, you ask.
Your boss seems to be sweating slightly as he leans over and quietly talks, “I have a special assignment for you, Mcminor. The Chairman's daughter is having some intestinal problems. Normally this would be out of the question, but… we are having problems identifying the source of the problem.” You raise an eyebrow and ask, “What do you want me to do?” Your boss’s expression hardens as he says, “It’s not easy to say this, Steve. I need you to go through her tract and find out what the problem is.”
You can’t believe what you are hearing, as you are about to complain, he interrupts you. “Normally this would be out of the question… but the guy is putting us in a tough spot. We will reimburse you for your… uhm… travel time…” You can’t believe what you’re hearing; you spent your fair share of time going through the human body growing up, but you thought that point in your life was over… You could always use the money though… and luckily your body was too tough to be broken down by gastric acid so it’s not like you would get hurt…
After thinking about it for a little bit, you finally say “okay, fine. When are we scheduling it?” Your boss raises his eyebrows (I guess he expected you to put up more of a fight) and says “she’s in a room right now downstairs. If you want… you can do this now, or we can say you are out for the day and we can schedule another visit for tomorrow.” You look at the degrees on his wall and say, “tomorrow please, I’d like to talk with my family about it so they know that what is going on. “
He agrees and lets you get off of work early, considering you are going to be putting in some overtime hours soon. You pack up your desk and start heading out. Getting off of the elevator, you work your way towards the front door, but someone suddenly plucks you off of the floor and into their hand. You look up and see…
