Chapter #3

Discovering the Reality Change Options

    by: Unknown
You click the "Reality Change" button, which causes a window to pop up: "WARNING: Reality changes caused by options in other sections of this program are as small as necessary to account for any physical or mental alterations. However, this section of the program will cause WIDESPREAD changes to reality. A direct undo option may not always be available following a change made in this section. PLEASE BE CERTAIN YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING."

You chuckle and press the "OK" button. The people responsible for this program really have a unique sense of fantasy, you think.

Now that you've cleared that warning window, what looks like a preferences screen appears -- tabs across the top, and then a variety of options below. The first tab is labeled "Physical Planet," and the options are things like "Color of Clear Sky," "Number of Moons," even "Extinct Animals" -- they've made it look like you could bring back the dinosaurs if you had the desire.

Another tab that catches your eye says "Your Species (Human)." It turns out to give you the options to change all of humanity in various ways, mostly physical. It appears that you could eliminate diseases, give everyone superpowers, have women average 3 feet tall while men average 7 feet tall -- any number of things.

You check out a tab labeled "Technology." At the top of the options is a box where you can enter a year and have current technology reflect the technology of that year -- suddenly be living in a cave if you went one way, and be living in a futuristic world the other way. There's also a long list of inventions and discoveries, each one with its own options. It seems you could make it so the light bulb was only invented last week, or make it so the brassiere would never be invented. There are also some future inventions on the list, which you could give a date in the past so that they've always been around -- "faster-than-light travel," "teleportation devices," and "holodecks" are the most obvious ones you spot. There's even a blank entry box for inventions that aren't on the list, either actual items or future devices you think up.

The tab at the far right end of the list is "Society." This one gives a bunch of slider bars under bizarre statements, such as Geeky High School Student Likely to Date Head Cheerleader (set to 8 out of 100), Words Considered Profanity Used in Casual Conversation (4 out of 100), and one that makes you chuckle, Pornographic Movies Reflect Reality (10 out of 100).

You still want to know what the object of this game is, but you shrug, pick one of the last three tabs you look at, and decide to make changes.

You have the following choices:

1. Your Species (Human)

2. Technology

3. Society
