That afternoon, after her presentation to the French club and tennis practice were both over, Jodie walked down the front steps of the school, gratefully leaving the high-pressure Lawndale High behind her once again.
Practically dragging her feet in exhaustion, Jodie muttered to herself "After all that I'm exhausted and I'm starving, even after everything I ate at lunch. Mack is right; I can't keep doing this. My parents control everything I do. No, I let them control me. But they don't control everything. ...I just can't stand up to them in person." Reaching the parking lot, she eased herself into her car, grateful to be off her feet.
"But I honestly do like helping out, and damn it, I'm good at what I do" she continued in her mind. "And even if they do go overboard sometimes, they are right about how much good I can do as a symbol; Daria helped me recognize that at the parade." She drove on for a few more miles deep in thought.
"No," she decided reluctantly, "I can't just drop everything, at least not right away. But I do need to do something to take back some control in my life. Somehow, in some small way" she concluded, pulling into the driveway of her family's upper class home.
Her stomach still rumbling after her vigorous work out at school, Jodie comes to a sudden decision. "That's it; Mack was right again. Heh, he was really on a roll today." New found resolve stiffening her spine, Jodie strode back to the kitchen.
"Mom and Dad don't control what I eat, and even I don't think they have any right to do so!" she justified to herself, even as she raided the fridge, pulling out another arm load of food. "And if I gain weight? Ha! That'll just server them right."
"Take this Mom and Dad!" cried Jodie around a massive bite of her dagwood sandwich.
In response to that outburst, Jodie heard her little sister Rachel's voice drifting from the family "Jodie, is that you?"
