Karla’s car sped through the still light city streets toward who knew where. She desperately wanted to know more about these mysterious little people, and recognised that they had to get together an organised plan to recover the other colonists but before there was time Conrad had interrupted. He had made radio contact with another group of colonists. So Karla had secured her group in a plastic box and placed them on the passenger seat of her car, held steady by her handbag. It was still a bumpy ride.
“This is worse than space travel,” Conrad’s vibrating voice yelled.
The other group of colonists were on a ‘vast white plane’. However, given their small size that could be anywhere. Probably an interior floor somewhere.
“Hey, Conrad. If they managed to radio you does that mean they can talk to humans like you can?”
“No. They just have regular coms with no extra amplification. I’m ship’s crew. The device I’m using is designed as a public address system! I’ve got it on full power. It’s really hurting our ears down here…
‘The signal’s intermittant, but I’ve got a lock on the source. Wait! They’re coming through again. I’ll put the com near my amplifier.”
Karla heard a staticcy but recognisably female voice.
(All Alieth names and language are translated into English equivalents.) Jacki was relieved to hear a friendly voice at the other end of the radio. She was no adventurer; just a librarian and mother and the desolate immensity of her surroundings made her nervous. She had the com, but it didn’t look like there were any ship’s crew here. Just a couple of hundred passengers milling about. Her two daughters clung to her, wide eyed. Scared, and who could blame them?
She spoke again, “Hello? Hello? Are you coming? I don’t know where we are. I don’t know what to do. My girls are scared. We just need help!” The reception died again.
