for starters, let me say, i work in a sex toy store. and i love it. its the best job i've ever had, and the most fun by a long shot. i don't have to deal with too many people, and most of them are nice.
there is no reason to be afraid of toy stores. they are just stores that sell sexual things. if you are uncomfortable with your own sexuality on some level, then of course a sex store is going to make you uncomfortable. there isn't anything to be embarassed about, everyone has sex, and some people like different things. i think if society in general took a little less of a childish attitude about it that there would be little problem.
i get all tooooo many guys that come to me and ask for help, and then comment, "my wife won't come in here". my response is, well i can only help you a limited amount, without her telling me specifically what she likes and desires. i have lots and lots of toys to choose from, and she's definately not going to like them all, and then there are going to be those that are perfect. but the best way to find it out (unless of course, you have an unlimited budget) is to come in and find out. and believe me, you, as a man, have very little idea of what she'd like in a sex toy :) no offense to the males... but in all truth very few men can truely understand what a woman wants, unless she's got the confidence and courage to be open and honest with her own sexual desires to him and herself.
as for my personal opinion, i grew up playing with massagers that i learned to use in other ways while no one was home. so i have a certain enjoyment for vibration, and to truely have a mind blowing orgasm, i really need vibration. sometimes if the situation is right its not neccessary, but most of the time it is. i have a couple different toys that i like and use. i prefer the gel kind over the hard plastic kind, they are a little easier on the inside. but thats my own personal preference.
