You make and fair point about the "personal" stories. Half the time, I feel like the dark elements of those stories are hinted at in the original piece. Some people have raised that point in the past, but it continues to get overlooked.
I do think that the negativity in news is there but skewed by our brains. After all, we humans do harbor negativity biases and give the bad news more weight. We even physically respond to negative news stories more, and that could result in us even seeking them out. Of course, many news outlets of all stripes know how to take advantage of this. Thus, we as news readers have to consciously pay more attention to what we're reading and how often. I might be covering this in my YouTube blog soon.
