I was unable to do a product review, so I'll just post in the forum:

Title: Hyperbole and a Half
Author: Allie Brosh
Length: 369 pages

Hyperbole and a Half is a collection of stories by blogger and webcomic artist Allie Brosh. The format is an interesting one – part regular storytelling, part comic art. It’s an effective combination, offering great insight into Brosh’s mind as she shares of her life, experiences and emotions.

In this collection you’ll find stories of her youth, some highly entertaining accounts of her dogs and some brutally honest accounts of her struggles with depression. Brosh doesn’t hold back. She examines herself and offers it all – her highs and her lows, her strengths and her flaws, and that’s what makes Hyperbole and a Half so gripping. As someone who, like Brosh, has a tendency towards procrastination, I found it relatable, too.

There is a lot to like about this collection. I can’t even begin to list my favourite stories because there are so many! The birthday cake story is highly entertaining. The time her mother wanted to explore the woods. The stories about her dogs – if you have ever had a pet you’ll probably love those, because they all have their own, unique ways.

The way she discusses mental health is excellent. As I mentioned above, I recognised myself in her story about procrastination. The way that you could and should do this small thing, but for some reason you don’t, and no matter how hard you try you still don’t, and then it becomes this big, awkward thing that’s now surrounded by this ball of anxiety and shame... Her stories about depression hit hard, too. As does the way she describes how other people do not know how to cope with you in that state – the dead fish example is spot on.

Oh, and the goose! Definitely read the one about the goose!

I cannot think of anything I don’t like, to be honest. Her art style is fun and effective, the stories are good. They’re just the right length if you just want a quick read, though if you’re like me you’ll want to keep on going.

It’s unique, and quirky, and different to anything else on my bookshelf, but I already know I’ll return to it again.

A highly recommended read.
