Pressing the Italics button above this window places the following in your text wherever your cursor is: {i}{/i}. You must set your cursor between these to make them Italic. If you wish to use the WritingML feature for Italics, you need to make sure you have {i} before the text you wish italicized and {/i} at the end of the italicized text.
If you already have the text in your document and you wish to make it Italics, highlight that text and use the Italics Icon option at the top of the text window. It will automatically italicize the highlighted text.
By the way, when you're typing in the "edit" window, the text will not show Italics, Bold, Underline, etc. You must save and display your work to see the attributed work.
