It made the game more interesting because there was not this sense of improbability and, to my mind, ridiculousness about it. I know 5e has fans and people prefer it, but I think it has taken the imagination and problem-solving out of being limited.
And my son (who is 20) and his friends gave up on 5e and went back to AD&D1, taking my books to play their games.
5e is fine for some. For me, it is just a "whatever you want" scenario, which is boring.
