The Great Egg Hoist. Three pairs of bright eyes stared through the gap in the fence. Benny at ten was the oldest and the master strategist. His team for the hoist were his younger brother Issac and six year old sister Charlotte. “Are you ready?” Benny asked. They grinned wildly at the thought of Easter eggs well before Easter. “Just stick to the plan Charlie.” Charlotte stood up and walked to the front door of their neighbour, Mrs. Rickett’s house. Benny and Issac scampered around to the back kitchen door and waited to hear the front door bell ring. The plan was simple and effective. Charlotte would ring the door bell; Mrs. Ricketts would open it and agree to buy some Girl Guide biscuits. Charlotte would take five minutes explaining how long it took her to cook them which would give the boys time to enter the kitchen and take four large Easter Eggs from the fridge. The same eggs Benny had seen the day before when he returned some milk his mother had borrowed. Issac scratched his ear and frowned at his brother. “She’s taking a long time isn’t she?” he said. It seemed they had been crouching for several minutes and no door bell sound. Benny sighed, “What is she doing?” Issac pushed a garden chair to the window and carefully stood up. His jaw dropped and he looked back at Benny. Benny carefully stood on the chair beside his brother and peeked in. Charlotte was sitting at the kitchen table with Mrs. Ricketts and drinking lemonade with one of the large Easter eggs opened in front of her. Benny shook his head. “What bit of stick to the plan didn’t she understand?” |
