First Solo

Josh Walker, the Chief Flying Instructor sauntered into the School office.

“Morning everyone,” he said. “Sorry I’m late.”

Tina the newest member of the team looked up from behind the counter and smiled quizzically. “Good morning. I thought you were already flying?”

The two other instructors busy with the days preparations waved back in acknowledgement.

Tina rummaged through the papers on her desk and knocked over her coffee mug in the process.

“Are you alright?” asked Josh. He picked up the daily weather report and skimmed the sheet.

Something is wrong here,” Tina said staring at the mess in front of her. “Something is very wrong.”

The three flying instructors stopped what they were doing and stared at her.

“Well you’re all down here and VH-TAY has just taken off,” she said. Perspiration beaded on her forehead.

Josh frowned. “Is that a problem? Was it scheduled for private hire?”

Peter looked at Ian and then at Josh. “I sent Mrs. Thurman to VH-TAY and told her to start the pre-flight checks and someone would be along shortly.”

Ian’s jaw dropped. “I sent the new student Stephen Norris to VH-BAY and told him to get in but don’t touch anything.”

Josh turned white and steadied himself on the counter. “So what you’re telling me is we have a student with two hours experience up there with someone with zero hours, flying over Sydney.”

Tina sat tight lipped and nodded her head.

Josh reached for the radio set. “Let’s hope Mrs. Thurman doesn’t find out the guy next to her is just a passenger.”

Mrs. Thurman, Mrs. Thurman, can you hear me. Please return to the airfield immediately.

Josh put the mike down and turned to Tina. “Do me a favour, check our liability and insurance policies are all up to date.”
