Mother's Day Robert stepped out of his open top sports car and straightened his tie. It was a crisp spring morning and he had parked conspicuously opposite the large double front doors to the nursing home. It was an impressive old English mansion once home to Lord Swaythling but sold many years ago to the ‘The Hunter Retirement Group’. He smiled at the nurses and staff as he sauntered down the rich wood panelled corridors to his mother’s room. He eventually found her in what was once the library. She was sitting in an oversized brown leather armchair with her head back and mouth wide open. The new nurse caught his eye. “Is my mother ok?” he asked nodding towards the armchair. The new nurse smiled. “Oh she’s fine. She’s only just dozed off. I’ll let her know you’re here.” Robert puffed his chest out a little more. The new nurse was something special. Mrs Graham spluttered back to consciousness and grinned when she recognised her son. “Robbie my darling, come give me a kiss.” Robert bent down and kissed his mother on the forehead. “Are you still wetting your pants? You always did.” Robert turned bright red. “That isn’t true mother.” “You always blamed the dog. Your father turned the security cameras around one day so they pointed back into the house. Poor Casper and to think we believed you.” Robert heard the new nurse giggle and close the library door behind her. “Not funny mother!” Robert hissed. “Since when did we have a dog or security cameras?” He pulled a chair up beside her and took her hand in his. She let out a breath. “Your old mum has to have a bit of fun. You’re here to see me not impress the girls. How have you been darling?” |
