I think as far as Will goes it's largely a plot device to switch the PoV to another character and see, in their own thoughts and actions, what they'd do with this stuff instead of being filtered through interaction with Will. It can definitely be used for a sense of existential crisis too but that seems to be its main function. I think that if you had Will use a band on someone else, though, you could get interesting or even amusing set ups because this isn't simply putting on a magical disguise, this is almost like (as Oliver in these chapters describes it) copy-pasting someone's soul into someone else's body.

Mostly when it's not Will putting on a band, it's him copying himself into someone else but there's obviously a whole slew of possibilities. What if Jenny's anima was placed into someone like Chelsea or Kelsey? What if "Kelsey" found herself in someone like Cassie? Or Melanie Saxon? At the same time that runs into the problem of why not just do a swap with the masks.
