If this current stuff seems unfocused it's definitely a result of the fact that, as I said, I'm largely just winging it. I've had a vague plan but I'm also not tying myself into having to hit this or that point but also not ignoring things completely. In this chapter, for instance, you learn what Laurent wanted to do with Kim's mask and originally this was going to end on Laurent getting in touch with Will and asking him to do the prank and Will having to decide whether or not he was going to do it. But as I was writing, I figured Will's in a mask and he's all alone so it's time he finally did something and then I eventually just kind of ran out of space to really properly introduce Laurent asking Will if he wants to do it. But the gun has been shown on the mantle so it's now there waiting to get fired at some point even if it's not necessarily immediately. That and I also came up with an IMO more fun twist regarding Marc that you'll see in the next chapter. And yeah, I know this section as a whole is unfocused and while that can be an issue it's also a strength. As I've said before I think that most teenagers, when given these masks, would use them to mess around like what Laurent and his pals are doing until or if something comes along to focus them. So I think that holds true here as well. It's light fun until something happens that gives Will (and Laurent and Marc and whoever) more of a reason to zero in on something and that can be broad enough to be whatever an author would want it to be... within reason. That said, I still have no idea at all what to do with Ratliff and the others so if those guys seem or are sidelined that's why. |
