Writing.Com takes a more writing terminology and we call them "Cover Photos", following like the "cover" of a book. We don't refer to them as avatars anywhere on the site.

Aside from that, we're a site founded in 2000 having just celebrated 24 years serving the writing community... given that age, you're likely to find plenty of UX that you don't like here.
