It is one of those known problems and can go both ways. Writing characters of a different gender can be difficult. Romance novels are good examples where there might be some unrealistic or overly emphasized physical descriptions when it comes to the male characters.
I'm fairly certain the writing podcast, Writing Excuses, did a talk or two about it since some male fantasy authors have been discussed for less than realistic female characters.
So, while it's a fact that exists, whether it hinders the reading experience is up to the individual.
