First, it involves me reviewing past preps to see which outline format(s) I tend to use. While I know I've used more than 1, I'm sure I lean toward just 1 or 2 more often than the rest. Or perhaps, for me, it leans toward a different outline format for each genre.
So, starting with the idea of which outline method will most likely work for my item, based on the stuff above, I wonder how it would work if, when I still have just a tiny kernel of an idea, I kept that outline always in front of me when working. I have it out when doing What Ifs. I maybe even do What Ifs for each section. And instead of my current plan, where I build the story, then try to find an outline that will fit, I build the story around the outline.
Okay, to most professional writers who use outlines, they're probably like, "Duh!" But this is the first time this idea has occurred to me, so I feel extra smart right now. lol
