This is the pivotal end point of the story, where the whole tale coalesces into something amazing. Even pantsers often have a vague idea of where the story will end, what will happen at the ending. It is what makes the story work... or fail. Things to remember: * The climax does not need to be the very end, as some loose endings could be tied up. * The main character/s need to have grown/changed over the course of the story. and the climax should show this * Deus ex machina endings annoy readers * Introducing new characters that become pivotal at the climax also annoys readers But instead of me re-inventing the wheel, here's Abbie. Last year I promoted the Hello Future Me channel, but I have discovered Abbie Emmons this past year and she is another strong presenter. |
I, too, have a problem with characters magically appearing. Seems like the author uses them to suddenly make the pieces all fall together with no thought of why and how they are there. Did they just drop in because you weren't sure how to solve your puzzle? Queen NormaJean 2023 Quill Finalist. 2023 Quill Nominee. Quill Finalist Logo 2022 . New characters can show the way toward a great climax. let them do whatever and take the gems and leave the rest. Allow them to show you the way and whatever you can not use you can save for another story. Meanwhile, take the characters out and use the information they gifted to you for your story. Another thing that annoys me is when the characters suddenly have magic or powers that they didn't even come close to exhibiting in the rest of the story which turns the tide. The recent Borderlands movie is a case in point. How can a character go through her whole life to middle age without realising she can teleport, and then have complete control over the power to influence the ending?! Sorry. That film really, really annoyed me... |
Sorry, but I didn't know what a deus ex machina was. A deus ex machina is a plot device whereby an unsolvable conflict or point of tension is suddenly resolved by the unexpected appearance of an implausible character, object, action, ability, or event. I thought to put the explanation here for others who didn't have a clue. But the rest was very clear! Thanks. Pumpkin Tag Be careful out there! October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! |
Sorry, my bad. I automatically make assumptions I shouldn't. I comes from ancient Greek plays where, at the end, a god or the like comes down and saves the hero. It means "mechanics from a god", and basically is a get out of gaol free card for a hero. Think the ending of Jurassic Park, the original film/book, where the heroes are under attack from the velociraptors and suddenly the T.rex appears and attacks only the other dinosaurs, and not the people, so the people can flee and survive. Yay! But deus ex machina. |
Exactly! Which is another reason to Prep. Once you realize you need that character in Chapter 33, you can figure out how to introduce them in Chapter 5. Cheers, Michelle Battywyn |

Thank you very much for the education. I now have another way to see what I write and hope to improve my skill set.
