A month-long novel-planning challenge with prizes galore. |
We have a fee day on Sun October 6, but we should be getting into the nitty gritty of planning our novel (shout out to all you planners out there!). As such, I think the ways of plotting could be looked at to give you an idea of what is out there. "20240620 Plotting Techniques Part 1" "20240621 Plotting Techniques Part 2" This covers some of the more common ones. For plantsers, here's a technique that a friend of mine introduced me to: Chase the cat! What this means is you plot the first 3 chapters. When you finish chapter 2, plot the next 3 chapters based on what you have written thus far. When you get to chapter 5, repeat... and so on, adding 3 more chapters whenever you have one chapter left to write. Just some things to contemplate! |
Thanks for the ideas. Planners and plotters take note of these hints BUT For all the pantsers out there, yes you! In honor of those flying without a parachute: 2023 Quill Finalist. 2023 Quill Nominee. Quill Finalist Logo 2022 . Quill Nominee Signature 2022 Preferred Author |
As a complete pantser, I have 3 ideas swimming, waiting for November... Waiting to write is killing me, |
1,000 GPs were sent to s with this post. Okay - but my first instinct is why are you waiting for November? Is there a ban on fishing in October where you live? Catch those ideas in nets. Filet them. See if they will be suitable for a meal. You can freeze them if you want to wait a few weeks. Queen NormaJean Image #2291665 over display limit. -?- . Image #2291664 over display limit. -?- . Because if I write now then it's words not written in November. |
But if the writing done now is just rough drafts, I would not consider that writing for the novel in November. I would consider that training for the main event. Information gathering if you will. Yeah, my head doesn't work that way. I don't draft, either. I write... that's all I do. |
I get it. I guess you just have to let those ideas just twirl around, swimming and waiting for November. It's getting closer every day. Good luck. I'm with QueenNormaJean maybesnow?! on this. You can always write MORE words in November. Cheers, Michelle Battywyn |

Me too! I just want to write my book already! I wonder if it'd be okay to just write two instead of prepping next year? Write the one we prep in Oct and then write another in Nov? |
I'm spending October writing columns for weekend notes so I won't have to think about it come November, getting myself way ahead of schedule. That way, the stories in my head can percolate on the back-burner and be ready for quick delivery come November. |
Well, I assumed we couldn't because it's prep But it'd be cool if we could! |
Well, I am prepping three novels. One of them, I am technically already writing because it is a novel I am using for a romance writing class with House of Sensual Prose. Actually, the third is one I started working on for the class but had to switch cause those characters don’t go on traditional dates since they are getting together in secret. Novel 1 is a young adult where I have only done a test story before so haven’t written any of the actual novel yet. My plan is to write that one during November but I can work on the others whenever I want. All that matters is what I count for the official numbers during NaNoWriMo are only written in November. Never know how well November will go. I could only get 20k or as much as 160k, so net hurts to have other things to finish on the side in case I feel okay and get lots of writing done early. |
That's awesome, Dawn. Thank you for sharing! |
