I've looked at about twenty books, and found one that's seems to be a good intro.

A Very Short Introduction
It's short enough to get through, and the prose is quite good, but there is the usual critical BS that gets a bit deep from time to time. I'll probably read this twice and then move on to something else.
Still looking for more suggestions.
