If you ask it to write something long, it can get repetitive - not just from a narrative perspective, but in their use of language. And one thing I've found with a lot of them is that, if you give them a dark theme to work with, they are grimly determined to put some kind of upbeat, positive ending on it, no matter how implausible. You can control that to some extent by extending the prompt that you give it, or filling in a box somewhere that asks how the story should develop, but you always feel you're fighting with it. I feel fairly confident that I could spot an AI composition in the here and now, but I wonder where we'll be in, say, 10 years' time.

I was quite impressed with one recently, where I deliberately gave it a nonsensical prompt just to see what it would do. I've put it in my blog:
