Normally not to read but a good monologue delivered to an audience can be extremely immersive. Think of the monologue plays by Barry Humphries where Sandy Stone talks about life for a fine example. To read them, they're fine; to hear them, they are incredible. Monologues, to me, are designed to be heard.
