NOV 2024 - hang out with theBees and enjoy the Honey. NEW challenge for 1-15 NOV is OUT! |
Just a quick musing -- Self publishing isn't easy. Just a little background -- I was picked up by small press publishers in 2010 and very thrilled to have been picked up. I had one for children's stories, novel length romances, and short story romances. During this time, 2 of my short stories, both mainstream fiction were awarded 8th place in the Writer's Digest annual contest. I'm pretty solid that my writing is pretty solid. If anything, I lack time to consistently market my books. I buy advertising in places I can afford, Fussy Librarian, Kindle Book review and Written Word Media. I'd love to do local events, but I usually find out too late to book an affordable booth. I have a friend who loves to sew and does more of these local events, so now it's just a matter of coordinating to book a booth we both can share. That said, 2 of the small presses went out of business in 2018. Since, I've been advised it's best I self publish. I don't mind self publishing at all, but it is time consuming. From looking over my stories, deciding if they need an edit, evaluating the cover, acquiring ISBN's, copyrights, formating, etc... every stage is time consuming if you want to have it done right. Last year I was able to republish "Arrow Through the Heart" and "A Polish Heart" which through a content edit where I add more content to flesh out the story. This year, I was able to publish "The Wolf's Torment" which went through a minor content edit, where I fleshed out a few more plot points more concisely. My next project will be "Gifts," a short story which is a sweet contemporary Christmas story. It needs a new cover and I'm still doing a re-read to determine if it needs a minor content edit. BUT I have had NO time to do this content edit. Every time I catch up on something, something else happens which requires my time. Sigh... And I need to do the sequel to The Wolf's Torment soon. And I might have had a 3rd small press fold up. I'll know more soon and will update, but if it has, that will add 3 more titles I will need to work on to republish. Steph |
