Interesting - you think Obsidian would've done a better job than Larian, then? Do note that Wizards of the Coast set up the events that led to the effective unmaking of the endings of the previous games - on a tabletop adventure, nonetheless! (But that only applies to one specific character - you can always consider your headcanon to be different!)
As for the pandering, that's kinda controversial. Not everyone's happy with the changes - sure, maybe there's a reference to Minsc and Jaheira, and one of the Origins is tied to the first two games, but there's a bunch of people that hate what Larian did with two extremely well-known characters.
I'd say, Larian did pretty well with what they got. The name of Baldur's Gate was used out of brand recognition - and they weren't going to make a game with a full editor, so they couldn't use Neverwinter Nights instead. My only gripe is that it yet again reinforces the Forgotten Realms rather than other settings, which is already a pet peeve of mine in the tabletop.
