I got to start off with The Hardy Boys by Franklin W. Dixon. Two boys follow in their father's footsteps as junior detectives. Along with several friends, the gang go up against thieves, counterfiters, and other lawless individuals. They get caught from time to time which really adds to the suspense. They investigate all sorts of places from towers to sawmills to abondoned houses, many with secret rooms. Start off with the first book "The Tower Treasure"!
