It wasn't that bad - I mean, the writing was beautiful and the story itself wasn't terrible either. It's just that there were a lot of things that annoyed me, not so much the book itself but the time period and people's attitudes and behaviours. I get unnecessarily riled up - instead of saying, "Okay, so that's how it was in those days, how interesting," I start obsessing about what was wrong with people. My other half, who has never read the book and is in no way responsible for the content, was subjected to various rants about child neglect, British colonialism and various other things while I was reading, and just when he thought I was done, I looked up the Christian Science stuff and started all over again It made for interesting conversations in my house over the last week...
