I see where you're going TMI-wise... but I could cope surprisingly well with it.
It's not so much the information per se that makes it a bit heavy-going but rather Gauß's "heady" view of the world. Humboldt has quite some absurd – in the context – quirks (also verbally), but he's more "accessible"... and so his account.
