Wow. This is a comprehensive review. You make this book come alive, even though I haven't read it. It sounds like it might be a bit heavy-going for me. I don't think my brain could cope with so much information. I like the themes of class, and I love the way you describe the weather as being almost a character on its own.
It made me smile when I read your father didn't read fiction. It reminded me of my own dad. He never read fiction. He thought it was pointless, and he only ever read books about science, nature, woodworking and gardening. I'd forgotten about that until I read this review
