The Hunger Game
There was a knock at the door. I opened it, expecting my sub sandwich to be delivered. Instead, there were three people standing there, dressed in dark blue clothing on my step.
The man with slicked back hair said,
"Hi, you've won a prize. May we come inside?"

I looked down at my stained t-shirt. And I hadn't even combed my hair yet. I was already annoyed, as it was only 8:30 in the morning.
"What's the prize?"
The woman of the trio flashed dazzling white teeth.
"This big check here."
She moved it up and down in her stick like arms like a puppet. I squinted to see the amount written on it, but I didn't have my glasses on.
"Well, what is it?"
The older man cleared his throat.
"Because you've played our sweepstakes game, you've won some money. You're a winner!"
My stomach growled. I could see the delivery guy coming. He was walking up.
"Look, I'm hungry. If you're not going to tell me what I've won, I'm going to ask you to leave."
The trio's mouths were slack jawed. The delivery guy pushed past them, handing me my sub sandwich.
"Have a good one, Al."
"Thanks," I said, unwrapping it and tearing into with gusto.
Slicked back hair guy waved his hands.
"Let's go. He doesn't want five thousand dollars."
I began to choke on my sandwich, trying to swallow.
"Wait, wait-"
The three ran back to their van festooned with balloons, and drove off.
"Come back! Come back!"
Next time, I'll be ready. Hair combed, clean shirt, and not expecting a delivery for food.
Whom am I kidding? All I can do is cry.
