For my second June book, I chose "Carmilla" by Joseph Sheridan Lefanu published in 1871. It's a cult classic with vampire fans.
Anyway, it revolves around a female first person narrator from England who lives alone with her widowed father in Germany. Her life is somewhat lonely until a girl her own age named Carmilla comes to stay at the castle. The girls take to each other. If this story took place today, you would describe them as, "besties". And this part of the book is just so wholesome and sweet. You want to lean into the book and hug both of them. Of course, that would be a mistake, particularly in the case of Carmilla, who for some reason, only comes out at night.
Eventually, the narrator begins having strange nightmares about Carmilla, and these are tantamount to Lesbian porn. Carmilla is seen biting the narrator on the breasts and other such things.
Of course, Carmilla is a vampire. No big surprise there. Anyway, this book is a relatively easy read for a book written in the 19th century. It also happens to be very short (which, If I'm being honest, is part of the reason I chose to read it here). So, if you want to read an entertaining vampire book that's not too much trouble, I recommend this.
