I was talking to a Vietnam Veteran in a soup kitchen, and I asked him if living on the street was as hard as fighting in a war, and he laughed like that was the funniest thing he'd ever heard. Apparently, fighting in combat is totally overwhelming. It leaves the men who have been in combat permanently marked. When I was in the army 1977 - 81 there were a lot of Vietnam Veterans still in service. Some of them still had that "thousand yard stare" they say combat veterans often get. Being in the military in war and in peace has its challenges. It's not easy for anyone.
