Award winning books 1 — Krabat
I have been reading "Krabat and the Sorcerer's Mill" by Otfried Preußler, a novel in the genre of magical realism about a Wendish miller's boy who has to stand up to his master.

The book, which is already somewhat older, is 264 pages long in the hardcover version and is rated 4.5 stars on Amazon. The first edition was published by Arena-Verlag in 1971, after the author had worked on it for 10 years. It was awarded the German Youth Book Prize and the Polish Youth Book Prize in 1972. It also received the European Youth Book Award from the University of Padua, as well as the American Library Association Award as Notable Book of 1973 and the Polish Publishers Association Youth Book Award in 1977.

The characters in the story are fictional. The book is based on a Sorbian saga.

The book is primarily about the miller's boy Krabat, who works in a mill near Schwarzkollm and learns evil magic. We see his efforts to solve the mystery of the mill. We see how he struggles to conquer the heart of Kantorka while trying not to attract attention. We see how every New Year's night the smartest character dies. And in the end, we see Krabat overthrow the Master with the help of Juro and the Kantorka. Soldiers, bones and dreams with ravens also appear in the book.

I particularly like the complexity and the interesting possibilities of interpretation (e.g. Herr Gevatter as death), because they provide a lot of material for conversation. However, you have to bear in mind the somewhat older language, which is why I would not recommend the book for children under 11 (it is possible that words like "Pritsche" or "Koraktor" will otherwise have to be looked up).

As an interesting addition, you can also read through the Krabat saga, a saga on which the book is based or based on.

If you like books about evil magic, fantasy and multi-layered novels or books with ruthless antagonists and far-sighted mentors, I can only recommend this book. I enjoyed it very much.
