Perhaps it would if the Will/Sydney storylines progressed a bit further. So far, she's shown - as you said - extreme loyalty to him, but there's nothing so far that has challenged it. About the one point when something happened besides falling in love with him was very early, when Joe duped them into being "Dee" only to claim the Libra, since there wasn't anything "magical" about him anymore. What would happen if someone with greater magical "power" (I'd say "potential" instead) and knowledge presented later on, when they've uncovered more about the Libra? That would challenge her core beliefs - if that person (let's say, for the purposes of proper complications, that Joe *is* that challenger, as he's better versed with magic and is a skilled liar) were to try to sway her away by claiming they can do the Brotherhood thing far more efficiently, and that the only thing she needs is to steal the Libra from him, using his way in words, what would she do? What if that happened when they're pretty far away on their schemes, and Will is willingly (pun not intended) embracing the tenets of the Brotherhood? What *could* make Sydney choose Will over someone who's essentially his better in every way - the very thing he dreads? Sadly, most of the stories focus on the early moments - they don't delve as deep, and therefore don't allow for that needed romantic development. Sydney's designed to be a malignant, corrupting influence on Will, but there's an argument to be made about the opposite (i.e., Will being what takes her away from the Brotherhood and into someplace where she might be of use - i.e., the Stellae.) Speaking of which: what would you think of a love rectangle-with-crossed-section? Specifically, a Will-Sydney-Joe-Rosalie complex pairing? While there would be some inclinations (Will and Sydney, naturally, and also Joe and Rosalie), some complications could be made that can move that towards unexpected places (such as Rosalie acquainting herself so much to Will that Joe feels jealous and starts courting Sydney, only to realize that the jealousy is because Joe has unrequited feelings towards Will and can't bear to accept them). That would be the strangest pairing, I believe. |
