Don't try, do. Write and write and write. It's a first draft meaning get all of the ideas on screen or paper so they are not lost. Send the editor on a long vacation. Let the characters write your story and enjoy the process. Did I mention WRITE? It doesn't have to be anywhere near publishable. Keep the words flowing and ideas moving and write. Using chapters or some sort of means for keeping like or similar ideas together will allow you to jump around as needed. Most importantly is to keep writing and not to allow the editor to toss you off the writing path. You'll be able to create a story of 50k words easily, go for it!
